DCA Live hosted a Cyber Leaders Roundtable on April 28 to check in with leaders of the region's fastest growing cyber security companies on the challenges and opportunities presented by the pandemic.

A big thanks to Jay Doyle, managing director at Ankura for co-hosting the discussion and to Sindy Yeh from Arlington Economic Development for joining as well. More on Jay below and Arlington is home, of course, to many of the region’s hottest cyber companies.

Participants:

Joe Saunders, CEO, RunSafe Security Inc.
Ron Gula, President, Gula Tech Adventures
Grant Elliott, CEO, Ostendio, Inc.
Craig Stevenson, CEO, HyperQube Technologies
Jennifer O'Daniel, CEO, CIT - Center for Innovative Technology
Vince Crisler, CEO, Dark Cubed
Andrew Morris, CEO, GreyNoise Intelligence
Jay Doyle, Managing Director, Ankura
Sindy Yeh, Arlington Economic Development

Highlights of the discussion:

  • Back to basics – focus building security products with clear and immediate value. Prospective buyers less interested in the abstract.  Focus on creating offerings that are easy to demo, easy to buy, and easy to implement.

  • Every client’s expense is on the chopping block so double down on product and current customers.  Use this period to listen to your customer, and to work on product enhancement and improvements to strengthen those existing client relationships.

  • When we come out of this the cyber threat from bad actors more active then ever and there will be many opportunities.  Many attempts to take advantage of this environment and exploit new vulnerabilities about online communications and transactions as the world shifts to new tools and products.

  • Raising capital will be very tough.  The entire food chain of venture capital is under stress.  Those who raised money in Q4 ’19 and Q1 ’20 in much better shape than those who didn’t.  Some term sheets that had been offered in March have been taken off the table.

  • Almost all have a freeze on hiring and are deferring fundraising as long as possible.

We’re grateful to Jay Doyle, Managing Director at Ankura for co-hosting and contributing to the discussion.
