What do you wish you knew when you were 20: How to grill a steak correctly, how important family and friends are, not to take yourself too seriously.

When you interview someone for your team you’re looking for: A team-player, who brings value, is positive and a go getter.

Ryan McQueeney, CFO, RedOwl

Favorite things to do you outside the office: Coach softball, play golf.

What do you wish you knew when you were 20? The power of networking. Creating strong relationships in business will help carry you and introduce you to opportunities throughout your career.

When you interview someone for your team you’re looking for: I am looking for passion in work, deep understanding of why they do things and a team player (i.e., someone who wants the team to succeed first and themselves second).

Hometown: Hamden, CT

Favorite things to do you outside the office: Spend time with my Fiancé, our pets, and our family & friends. I also read nerdy business books.

What do you wish you knew when you were 20? That there was a HUGE world full of opportunity and challenges outside of my little bubble. Also to buy Netflix and Apple stock.

Usman Shakir, CFO and Executive Vice President, Nika Techonolgies

Hometown: Norwalk, CT

Favorite things to do you outside the office: Play cards, watch sports, and spend time with the family.

What do you wish you knew when you were 20? Great question, but probably too much to list. Maybe knowing just how much my parents were right about most things and paying more attention to their advice.

When you interview someone for your team you’re looking for: The right “fit” and “get stuff done” attitude. Most people have the technical skills to do the job, so for me it comes down to fit and execution.

Brian Alexander, Chief Financial Officer, BoardEffect

Hometown: Falls Church, VA

Favorite things to do you outside the office: Traveling with family and friends. I also enjoy participating in my kids activities and coached both of them when they were younger. Now, I just enjoy being a spectator. I also enjoy golfing and wine tasting with any free time.

What do you wish you knew when you were 20? The importance of networking.

When you interview someone for your team you’re looking for: I look for individuals who are intellectually curious and are interested in learning new skills. I look for individuals who are problem solvers and have a proven track record of process improvements. I also look to ensure that they are a culturally fit for my team and the organization.
